Our gimbal balance machines are highly sensitive measuring instruments used to achieve state-of-the-art static balance of devices such as missile guidance systems for defense and airborne sensors and cameras for industry. They measure the "unbalance", or lack of stabilization, of a gimbal about each of its own axes of rotation to better than 0.1 g-cm.

Gimbal Balance Machines From Space Electronics

Space Electronics gimbal balance machines measure the unbalance of a gimbal about each of its own axes of rotation within tolerances smaller than 0.1 g-cm. These unique systems simultaneously measure the CG location for each pivoting assembly of the gimbal. To achieve simultaneous measurement, the gimbaled sensor is mounted on the machine so that the axes of the gimbal are in a vertical plane and each axis is oriented at 45 degrees from the horizontal. The gimbal is then rotated to four positions and the change of CG position is detected. Once the gimbal is perfectly balanced, its CG will not move as the gimbal is rotated about its own axes.

Static and Dynamic Balancing Capabilities

Space Electronics gimbal balancing machines are capable of static and dynamic balancing and can work with a range of gimbal configurations. Static balancing makes sure the gimbal is stable when at rest. This is completed before flight and relies on a proprietary process and a machine designed for the application. These machines efficiently balance gimbals about their rotation axes and maintain a tight tolerance. Dynamic balancing is also done before flight and ensures the gimbal is free of vibration and stable during operation. The process and machine for dynamic balancing varies depending on factors like maximum travel angles per axis, rotation speed and allowable residual unbalance. We can connect you with the right machine based on your needs.

Suitable for Many Applications

Gimbals are used in multiple ways on aircraft, and our gimbal balancing machines ensure they perform precisely during flight. Use our balance machines for applications such as:
  • High-resolution imaging: Detailed aerial photography, surveillance and mapping require a stable image. Balance gimbals to reduce jitter that disrupts image quality.
  • Directing antennas: Aircraft antennas are essential for maintaining communication with satellites and ground stations. Balancing these gimbals ensures communication links are reliable during flight.
  • Laser systems: Whether targeting or surveying, precision is key. Use our gimbal balancing machines to ensure precision for every laser system.
  • Target tracking: Defense, law enforcement and search and rescue teams rely on tracking from the air to maintain sight on ground targets. A highly accurate gimbal ensures target tracking is stable during flight.
  • Sensor integration: Data collection is valuable in various areas of an aircraft. The sensors used for this data collection are typically mounted on gimbals for reliable tracking, and gimbal balancing supports further accuracy.
